President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been declared winner of the August 2023 election, securing 52.6% of the vote.

His challenger, Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa, secured second place with 44% of the votes.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Priscilla Chigumba said:

“Therefore Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is declared duly elected President of Zimbabwe with effect from 26 August 2023.”

The poll was marred by malpractice and according to election observers including SADC, Carter Center, European Union, Commonwealth and African Union among others was full of irregularities.

Meanwhile the main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader has rejected the results.

“We reject any result hastily assembled without proper verification … we will advise citizens on the next steps as the situation develops. We will not relent on the people’s victory,” CCC spokesperson Promise Mkhwananzi wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Mnangagwa also narrowly defeated Chamisa at the last presidential election in 2018.
