SOUTH AFRICANS have expressed anger and disapproval after the ANC invited Zimbabwe’s ruling party Zanu PF to help in final election campaigns ahead of the neighboring country’s May 29 elections.

A few days ago, Zanu PF announced that it has been invited to join its colleagues on the campaign trail.

This triggered a public outcry from South Africans, saying ANC or South Africa has nothing to learn from Zanu PF as it has a long record of rigging elections.

South Africa’s opposition Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane questioned Cyril Ramaphosa about his plan with Zanu PF.

“What are you planning with Zanu PF, Cyril Ramaphosa? Why do you need the company or advice of the most brutal political party in SADC during our national elections?

“What assistance are you trying to get, ANC? What do you admire in Zanu PF? We all want to know,” Maimane said.

Political analyst Piers Pigou who is Southern Africa program head at the Pretoria-based Institute for Security Studies, weighed in saying it is disgraceful to invite Zanu PF considering unending reports of election rigging.

“The ANC is intent on its own goals! Zanu PF, who have beaten and cheated their way to multiple election victories, are hardly folks we want to learn from or emulate.

“It is disgraceful that South Africa’s ruling party even pretends it has something to learn from Zimbabwe’s shameful records,” Pigou said.
