The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has called upon government to address the remuneration gap between teachers and other government workers adding that all civil servants be given the same salary without any discrimination.

In a press statement PTUZ President, Takavafira Zhou said the issue of different wages in various government sectors must be addressed urgently.

“Prof Mavhima said that negotiations with workers representatives will continue but since then, there has been no single no single meeting with workers representatives. What Minister Mavhima has done is to render even the NJNC impotent or meetings between government team and the moribund Apex Council, remote and nullity. It is clear based on past history that the purported continued negotiations with workers representatives is a ruse or homiletic bellicose tailor made to pacify government workers.

“The government has done nothing to address the issues of salary discrepancies within government workers. With the 45% award, the gap between teachers and other government workers currently earning double and treble the salaries despite having less qualifications and responsibilities, would continue to grow or widen.”

For a long time teachers have been up in arms with their employer, the government over poor remuneration and bad working conditions. Recently the teachers led by the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) took their protests to the newly erected Mbuya Nehanda statue in Harare CBD.
