Charges against CCC members cooked up: Mwakanzi
The opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has condemned the arrest detention of Maureen Kademaunge, a newly elected Member of Parliament for the Sunningdale constituency.

The party alleged that Kademaunge’s arrest is politically motivated, with the charges against her being nothing more than flimsy and cooked up.

Kademaunge is currently being held at the Harare Central Police Station, facing charges of Malicious Damage to Property and Attempted murder.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, the party’s spokesperson, Promise Mwakanzi, who recently fled the country in fear of being arrested, said this latest incident is part of repression and vindication against CCC leaders, activists, members, supporters, and the general population that voted for CCC leader Nelson Chamisa.

“We condemn the arrest and detention of Hon. @MaureenKade

MP for Sunnindale constituency. Like all political prisoners, Maureen is being detained at Harare Central Police Station on flimsy & cooked up charges,” Mwakanzi said.

Mwakanzi argued that the arrest and detention of Kademaunge undermined democracy, and threatened the rights of citizens.

“Mr. Mnangagwa has heightened repression and vindication against our Party leaders, activists, members, supporters and the generality of the Citizens for voting for  Nelson Chamisa and CCC,” he added.

Meanwhile, CCC has been lobbying Southern African Community Development (SADC) leaders to take action by organizing a fresh election in Zimbabwe and their proposal includes the crucial involvement of SADC and the African Union (AU) to oversee the entire electoral process, ensuring its transparency and legitimacy.

This follows after both national and international election observers reported that the electoral processes failed to meet international standards in terms of credibility, fairness, as well as principles of democracy.

According to the electoral body, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) President Emmerson Mnangagwa was the winner in the presidential race, securing 52.6% of the vote, while Nelson Chamisa of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change received 44% of the total vote.
