In a rare show of transparency the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance has unveiled to the public its long awaited financial audit report.

This follows allegations by it’s rival MDC-T that  millions were embezzled from the opposition party’s coffers since 2019.

Early this year, the MDC Alliance revealed that it had hired an international independent auditor to audit its financial books and subject itself (MDC Alliance) to the public whom the party said are the biggest contributors to its finances.

Government recently gave the opposition political party funds to Khupe’s MDC-T.

Unveiling the audited financial report in Harare today, MDC Alliance treasurer-general David Coltart said the exercise was not a statutory requirement but a “commitment to transparency”.

He said ,”This is not a statutory requirement but a demonstration of our commitment to transparency”.

Coltart added that as an alternative they are supposed to lead by example.

“Today might seem an insignificant day, but today as a party we have set a precedent that we should be transparent, we have to be the change we want to see in the society and our accounts are subjected to audit by a reputable international accounting firm.”

He chided the Zanu PF led government for lack of accountability and squandering country’s resources as they are not held accountable.

“For the past fourty years, we have to ask ourselves why this country which is so wealth has so many people who are poor. The answer is lack of accountability. For the last 40 years under the Zanu PF led government we have seen the squandering of our resources without accountability were a tiny oligarchy has became obscenely wealth on the backs of poor people . The reason is that they have not been held accountable.”

The audited financial report comes head on the heels of alleged embezzlement of party funds and other assets in the opposition.
