New York Times correspondent, Jeffrey Moyo (37) has been granted a $5 000 bail Tuesday, by Bulawayo High Court judge, Maxwell Takuva after spending 21-days in detention.
Moyo’s bail comes after he had been previously denied a bail application by Bulawayo Magistrate, Rachel Mkanga.
His bail conditions include surrendering his passport, continue residing at his home address and reporting to the closest police station once a month.
His lawyer, Douglas Coltart said, “New York Times journalist @moyojeffrey has finally been released after 21 days in custody.
“His detention was characterized by a series of illegalities & violations of his constitutional rights including prison officials refusal to release him yesterday despite being granted bail.
“”After detaining him for three weeks, the State has now essentially conceded on appeal that they have no case against Jeff and that the grounds on which they opposed bail in the Magistrate’s court were baseless.”
Moyo was arrested on the 28th of May and charged with violating the country’s immigration laws.
He is accused of helping two of his New York Times colleagues fraudulently acquire Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) accreditation cards conniving with ZMC official, Thabang Manhika.
