TEACHERS must be paid at a higher scale to invigilate exams on the Friday Sanctions Holiday, the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has said. The position comes after government, which appeared unaware exams were being written on October 25 when it declared the day a national holiday, yesterday issued a statement asking teachers involved in examinations to go to work on the day. “The Labour Act (Chapter 28:01) section 14c subsection 2 clearly states that ‘it is an employee’s right to be granted leave of absence on days declared public holidays’. Subsection 3 also reads ‘where an employee consents to work on a public holiday, he shall be paid not less than twice his current remuneration’ … We therefore expect the government to make sure they abide by the law and pay all Heads and teachers who will be reporting for duty on Friday 25/10/19 … We expect all schools to have requisite forms to be filled for teachers for SSB to process payment without any delays,” PTUZ secretary general Raymond Majongwe said in a statement. – Kukurigo
