Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry has shared an update on the ongoing refurbishment of the National Sports Stadium, which has been closed to international matches due to structural concerns.
Key issues, including missing bucket seats, outdated electronic turnstiles, and problems with the water supply system, were among the reasons for the stadium’s temporary suspension.
After visiting the stadium on March 10, 2025, Coventry expressed satisfaction with the progress. She confirmed that the installation of bucket seats is underway and that repairs to the water system are progressing well.
“I’m pleased with the progress. Although there were delays, we are now back on track. The bucket seats are being installed, and water system repairs are in progress,” said Minister Coventry.
Coventry further explained that the delays in the refurbishment were caused by the delayed release of funds from the Ministry of Finance. However, she assured that the financial issues have now been resolved, and the project is moving forward without further expected disruptions.
Engineer Nicholas Mutengu, overseeing the renovations, provided an update on the ongoing works. The focus is on installing turnstiles, completing the seating, and enhancing water and sanitation facilities. Efforts are also underway to improve the stadium’s lighting system, with old fixtures being replaced by energy-efficient LED lights and backup generators being added.
So far, one of the nine electronic turnstiles has been installed, with plans for two additional turnstiles for disabled access. The installation of the turnstiles is expected to be completed by the end of April.
Additionally, work on the stadium’s turf has begun, with the expertise of Zimbabwe Cricket curators, who manage the pitch at Harare Sports Club, being brought in to ensure quality. The installation of bucket seats has resumed, with work completed on VIP bays 15-18, while bays 19-21 are almost finished.
The government remains committed to completing the refurbishments, ensuring that the National Sports Stadium is ready to host international events once again.
