The former Manchester City striker latched onto a perfectly timed through ball from Marcos Llorente, showcasing composure as he slotted home the opener in the 66th minute.
Athletic Club came agonisingly close to levelling the score when Benat Prados’ header struck the post, followed by Iñaki Williams rattling the underside of the crossbar on the rebound.

Diego Simeone’s side entered the match knowing that three points would lift them above both Barcelona and Real Madrid, especially after Real’s earlier defeat to Real Betis on Saturday.
However, Atletico’s hold on the top spot remains uncertain, with Barcelona set to play their game in hand against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Looking ahead, Atletico will aim to add further misery to city rivals Real Madrid when the two sides clash in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter on Tuesday.
