The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has hiked fares with immediate effect.

These hikes are with effect from today, Saturday.

In a statement Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) said the hikes are up to over 200% in most areas with most peri-urban areas being affected the most.

The statement reads, “Notice is hereby given to public that ZUPCO will review its fare charges with effect from 1 August 2020. The new fares will be as follows.

“Local Routes (1-20 km radius), Combies-ZW$16, Buses-ZW$8, Long Distance and Peri Urban will be charged at ZW$2 per km.”

The rise in price comes in the wake of complains by passengers that ZUPCO is failing to meet it’s obligations and that it’s public transport monopoly should end.

Speaking to Bustop TV, PAZ president Tafadzwa Goriati said that the raise was justified but noted that it was difficult for passengers as wages are not rising.
Goriati said, “It will be difficult for most passengers to budget as their wages are not rising as is is the prices of everything.

“It is basic that when fuel prices rise, every other thing will follow suit. These hikes as such have been affected by the rise of fuel but I am afraid that most passengers will be affected badly.”

It has been established that all local routes, including Norton and Chitungwiza, have doubled in fares.
