The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has refuted social media claims about the alleged abduction of environmentalist Nadia Mabvirakure, stating that she is a suspect in a theft of trust property case currently under investigation.

Mabvirakure, the founder of Green Rebirth Trust—a carbon credit tree-planting initiative—was reported missing on March 5 after allegedly being taken from her Chitungwiza home. She was later found in Mutare five days later, reportedly in a state of shock.

Speaking at a press briefing in Harare, Green Rebirth Trust board member Abigail Mupambi accused Zanu PF member Batsirai Matiza of being involved in the alleged abduction, questioning his sudden interest in the project during Mabvirakure’s disappearance.

However, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi dismissed these claims, stating that Mabvirakure is under investigation for allegedly misappropriating US$15,200 meant for a greenhouse project in partnership with Matiza Foundation. According to Nyathi, she obtained building materials on credit under false pretenses, prompting a police report from Matiza Foundation.

Nyathi further stated that police had been searching for Mabvirakure since March 5 and had now located her. She is reportedly receiving medical attention under police guard while investigations continue.

Meanwhile, political activist Linda Masarira, who was part of the search team for Mabvirakure, accused the police of spreading false information, challenging them to prove their claims about her hospitalization.

As controversy continues to swirl, the case has sparked debate, with differing accounts from authorities and those close to the environmentalist.
