ZANU PF Politburo Reportedly Backs Plan to Extend Mnangagwa’s Term

by Bustop TV News

UK-based Zimbabwean lawyer and political analyst Brighton Mutebuka has cited sources claiming that the ZANU PF politburo has approved a proposal to amend Zimbabwe’s Constitution, potentially extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure.

According to the reports, the proposal was discussed in a tense politburo meeting, marking the first formal introduction of the idea within the party’s top decision-making body. Prior to this, pro-Mnangagwa rallies had reportedly been used to lay the groundwork for the amendment.

During the discussions, some party members allegedly argued that the proposed amendment was unconstitutional. Mnangagwa is said to have initially appeared indifferent but later asserted that a binding resolution had already been established, dismissing concerns over its legality.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga reportedly remained silent throughout the meeting, a move that surprised many within the party. ZANU PF National Chairperson Oppah Muchinguri is said to have taken a strong stance in support of Mnangagwa, criticizing those who remained quiet during meetings but later challenged party resolutions.

Following the politburo discussions, some members perceived to be aligned with Chiwenga, including expelled party official Geza, were reportedly pushed out. Observers suggest this could be part of a strategy to weaken Chiwenga’s influence within the party.

Reports indicate that Mnangagwa may have preemptively demonstrated his control over state institutions, including the military, as a warning to potential challengers. Some analysts speculate that recent military movements in Harare were orchestrated by Mnangagwa himself to reinforce his authority.

With the alleged politburo approval, attention is now expected to shift to the legal process, where Parliament could soon initiate constitutional amendments. If these reports prove accurate, Zimbabwe could be on the path toward Mnangagwa securing an extended presidency—or even a lifetime tenure.

Chiwenga’s next move remains uncertain, but political analysts suggest that if he intends to challenge Mnangagwa’s growing influence, he will need to act swiftly before his political options narrow further.
