Residents given 72hour ultimatum to remove illegal structures

Provincial Development Coordinator Harare Metropolitan Province, Tafadzwa Muguti has ordered Harare residents to remove illegal structures in their yards within 72 hours before council moves in to demolish them.

In a statement issued Monday, Muguti said, “The progress on demolition of structures and road servitudes and the second phase on restoring law and order.”

“We call upon residents to respect and observe the laws of the land as they will be no sacred cows in restoring order.

“This serves as a notice to peacefully remove all illegal tuckshops, durawalls and backyards cottages within 72 hours.

“After 72 hours our team will visit all locations to check if they are complying with laws of the land, remove your items to avoid the full wrath of the law,” he said.

In his statement, Muguti hailed the recent demolitions of vending structures in Mbudzi, Chitungwiza and Epworth.

He praised all stakeholders and members of the security services for assisting government to carry out the first phase of the operation.

“I would like to applaud our security services & all the stakeholders who have helped the government in carrying out our successful operation in Harare Metropolitan Province today (Monday).

“The launch of the operation was a success.

“Residents must take note that the second republic is not stopping at nothing. We are now getting into the next phase of our operation.

“This phase will target all those who constructed illegal durawall, backyard cottages & tuckshops in their yards,” Muguti said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Harare Residents Trust (HRT) director, Precious Shumba condemned lack of political will within the government.

He also urged government to fully implement devolution as cited in the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (number 20).

“The current challenges bedevelling our governance system is the lack of political will to fully implement devolution as provided for in Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (Number 20),” Shumba said.

In spite of this, the HRT director also said citizens are desperately looking up to their government for employment opportunities so they earn a decent living.
