Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior, the legendary Real Madrid and Brazil defender, has officially announced his retirement at the age of 36.

The news was shared in an emotional video on social media on Thursday.

Widely regarded as one of the most decorated left-backs in football history, Marcelo’s illustrious 19-year career saw him win an incredible array of trophies.

These include five Champions League titles and six LaLiga championships during his time with Real Madrid, where he became an iconic figure.

Marcelo also found success back in his homeland with Fluminense, playing a pivotal role in their Copa Libertadores triumph in 2023, following his departure from Real Madrid after their 2022 Champions League victory.

However, his time with Fluminense ended in November 2024 after a disagreement with head coach Mano Menezes during a match against Gremio.

The Brazilian star first joined Real Madrid from Fluminense in January 2007 as an 18-year-old, spending an impressive 15 and a half seasons with the club.

On the international stage, Marcelo represented Brazil 58 times, scoring six goals. While he never secured a major international title, he was part of the squad that won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup on home soil.

His retirement marks the end of an extraordinary career that left a lasting legacy in both club and international football.
