The curtain came down on the 2019 Exide Rugby 7s tournament this Saturday, 23 November, at Belgravia Sports club in Harare.
This year’s tournament attracted 16 teams which include Hatcliffe, Old Hararians, Old Georgians, Alexander Sports Club, ZRP, Mutare and eventual winners Pit-bull among others.
Speaking at the award giving ceremony, event coordinator, Shingi Vere said that the level of Rugby had improved this year and thanked all teams that participated.
“We would like to thank all teams that participated. The level of the game we saw this year is bigger. We wouldn’t have done this without our sponsors Exide whom we thank for their continued support,” said Vere.
The tournament took place for five weeks and Vere indicated how the tournament is conducted.
“The tournament took place in five weeks. Each week we had mini tournaments where teams garnered points. The team with the most points is crowned the eventual winners, he explained.
This year’s winners, Pit-bulls, managed to win the tournament without incurring a loss throughout the entire five weeks.
In their final match of the males division, Pit-bulls, clinched the title after they beat Mutare 15-7 in a thrilling encounter.
In the ladies category ZRP were crowned champions after topping teams such as Old Georgians and Zimbiru.
The teams that participated were given caps and the winners got trophies which they were not allowed to carry off the venue.
Some of the teams which took part and impressed are Mbare select, who have Carlos Matematema of Mabvuku. Next years tournament is likely to see an increase ladies teams.
