Nyasha Bandawe, a 22-year-old man in Mufakose, Harare, is accused of brutally murdering his mother and attempting to kill his five-year-old niece in a shocking incident on Wednesday.
Bandawe allegedly stabbed his mother, Hilda Drawu, 19 times on the neck following an argument. The 59-year-old victim’s body was then hidden under a bed.
After the attack on his mother, Bandawe reportedly turned his rage toward his young niece, stabbing her five times in the neck with a screwdriver. The child, the daughter of Bandawe’s brother, cried for help, causing him to stop the assault.
The incident occurred at a residence on Mutengeni Lane in Mufakose.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the case.

He stated that Hilda suffered 19 stab wounds to the neck and two to the hand, with the screwdriver used in the attack recovered at the scene.
“The accused hid the deceased’s body under a bed and locked the bedroom door,” said Insp. Chakanza. “He then proceeded to the dining room, where the child was seated, and stabbed her five times on the neck before leaving.”
Neighbours, alarmed by the commotion, contacted the child’s father, who returned home to find his daughter injured and screaming. The young girl informed him about her grandmother’s body hidden under the bed.
We rushed the child to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
Police have since arrested Bandawe, who now faces charges of murder and attempted murder.
