The horrific accident occurred on February 13, 2024, at the 262-kilometre mark along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road, near the Lutumba tollgate in Zimbabwe. This route is a major transport corridor, making the incident even more impactful.

Initial reports indicated that 17 individuals lost their lives at the scene, while seven others succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical treatment. Over the following days, two more victims passed away, bringing the total number of fatalities to 26. Tragically, the death toll continued to climb. On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, an adult female passenger who had been hospitalized at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare died from her injuries, increasing the total number of deaths to 27. National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed this heartbreaking development in a press statement released on February 14, 2025.

Government Response and Memorial Services

In response to the tragedy, the Zimbabwean government acted swiftly to organize state-assisted funerals for the victims. A memorial service was also held to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.   • Female Victim: An adult female wearing a black jersey and black trousers.
