BBC HARDTALK ANCHOR STEPHEN SACKUR VISITS MBARE

This week popular BBC Hardtalk host Stephen Sackur visited the sprawling Mbare township in Harare to see what life is like in a country with hyper-inflation, high unemployment, food shortages and rolling power blackouts being the order of the day.
The visit came barely a week after the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Hilal Elver, said man-made starvation is “slowly making its way into Zimbabwe” and most households in the country are unable to obtain enough food to meet their basic needs.
Stephen Sackur spends the whole day and in Mbare to see first-hand what life is like for ordinary Zimbabweans is like.
His interviews with the people on the ground revealed massive public dissatisfaction with the government of the day.
Most of the people who were interviewed said life under the late nonagenarian Mugabe was better.
One woman had this to say, “Life is tough, we can’t provide for the kids and right now they are not going to school, life under Mugabe was better .”
The crowd could be heard murmuring the same sentiments which were being echoed by the woman who was being interviewed.
President Mnangagwa’s administration is increasingly being put on the red line.
Efforts to try and charm the international world that the current administration is reforming and improving the living conditions of ordinary citizens seems to be hitting a brick wall as dissent seems to be prevailing amongst many ordinary citizens.
