Former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko’s objected trial on a Saturday (today) the first of February siting religious conviction (today) being a Sabbath day.
His trial over abuse of office charges will now take place on 13 February 2020
Mphoko, through his lawyer, Zibusiso Ncube, refused to face trial on a Saturday, siting that their religious conviction as Seventh Day Adventists does not allow them to “work” on a Saturday.
“We cannot compromise on the issue of the Sabbath.
Our conditions are that we do not work on Sabbath and on this one we believe in a higher authority, God” Ncube said
It is the State’s case that, on May 6, 2016, Mphoko, while still the Vice President of the country stormed Avondale Police Station and ordered the release of the then Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) CEO Mr Moses Juma.
Juma had earlier been arrested by the
Zimbabwe Anti-corruption Commission (ZACC) on allegations of fraud
