In a significant development for Zimbabwean football, former Premier Soccer League chairman Twine Phiri and ex-ZIFA financial director Phillemon Machana withdraw their appeal against the election of Nqobile Magwizi as the new Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president. The withdrawal puts an end to a contentious legal challenge that had cast a shadow over the election process and opens a new chapter for the association.

A New Beginning for ZIFA
In a statement released on Wednesday, Phiri and Machana announced their decision to withdraw the appeal. They explained that their primary motivation was to prioritize the stability and growth of Zimbabwean football. They expressed a desire to allow the newly elected executive committee, led by Magwizi, to begin its term on a “clean and uncontested slate.”
The two former candidates acknowledged that their recent engagements with various stakeholders had influenced their decision. They highlighted the importance of unity and collaboration in moving Zimbabwean football forward.
“We are grateful that in this season, ZIFA has attracted massive support and contributions from diverse sections of the population to whom we are indebted. Individuals like Mr. Chivayo and corporates alike have historically stood with the nation and the footballing world, sacrificing personal resources even in dire times. Such support is always encouraged and welcome and must not stop,” they stated.
The Role of Wicknell Chivayo in Zimbabwean Football
Wicknell Chivayo is no stranger to football sponsorship in Zimbabwe. Over the years, he has been a prominent figure in supporting the sport, often using his resources to assist the national team and other football-related initiatives. Initially accused of interfering in the election process, Phiri and Machana later clarified that Chivayo’s actions were consistent with his longstanding support for football.

Legal Battle Comes to an End
Phiri and Machana confirmed that they had instructed their lawyers to withdraw the appeal at CAS formally. This move effectively removes the final legal obstacle to Magwizi’s presidency, allowing him to assume full leadership of ZIFA without further controversy.
Their statement concluded with a call for unity among all stakeholders in Zimbabwean football, urging them to rally behind the new executive committee and contribute to a brighter future for the sport.
