ZRP hunts Blessed Mhlanga

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a search for journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who recently conducted an interview with war veteran and Zanu PF Central Committee member Blessed Geza. The authorities are investigating potential violations of Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

This section of the law criminalizes the unlawful distribution of data messages intended to incite violence or damage to property. The ZRP has urged anyone with information about Mhlanga’s location to contact their nearest police station or the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 703631 or via WhatsApp at 0712 800197.

The Controversial Interview That Sparked the Investigation

Blessed Mhlanga gained national attention after securing an exclusive interview with Blessed Geza, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s political landscape. During the interview, Geza made bold statements challenging President Emmerson Mnangagwa, calling for his resignation and hinting at the possibility of forceful removal if necessary.

This interview has since become a focal point of controversy, with authorities scrutinizing its content for potential legal violations. The ZRP’s interest in Mhlanga appears to stem from concerns over the dissemination of information that could incite unrest.

Armed Men Visit Mhlanga’s Office

Earlier this week, Mhlanga reported a disturbing incident in which three armed men visited his office in search of him. In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Mhlanga described how the men arrived unannounced and refused to disclose the purpose of their visit, leaving him and his colleagues deeply unsettled.

This incident has raised alarms about the safety of journalists in Zimbabwe, particularly those covering sensitive political topics. Mhlanga’s experience underscores the growing risks faced by media professionals in the country.

Police Summons and Legal Representation

Shortly after the armed men’s visit, Mhlanga received a phone call from the ZRP’s Law and Order division, summoning him for questioning. Expressing his concerns, Mhlanga stated that he would comply with the summons but only in the presence of his legal team.

“It’s a serious matter. This morning, three armed individuals came looking for me. They did not reveal their intentions. Moments later, I received a call summoning me to Law and Order. I will be appearing with my legal counsel tomorrow,” Mhlanga said.

Implications for Press Freedom in Zimbabwe

The developments surrounding Mhlanga’s case have sparked widespread concern about the state of press freedom in Zimbabwe. Journalists and media advocates argue that the targeting of Mhlanga sets a dangerous precedent, potentially discouraging others from reporting on contentious issues.
