Tswaing Local Municipality Mayor Norah Mahlangu has found herself at the centre of a scandal after an intimate video of her was leaked and circulated in a WhatsApp group linked to her party’s provincial leadership.
Mayor Takes Leave Amid Trauma
Following the leak, Mahlangu has opted for a month-long special leave, hoping to distance herself from the controversy. Reports suggest she is deeply shaken by the ordeal and struggling to cope with the fallout.
Municipal Speaker Sam Letlakane confirmed that Mahlangu is experiencing significant distress due to the video’s release and has chosen to step away from her duties to recover.
Leak Overshadows Recent Municipal Tragedy
The scandal comes shortly after Mahlangu attended the funeral of two municipal workers who tragically lost their lives in Agisanang township.

The workers fell into a sewer manhole while trying to clear a blocked drainage system. Before the scandal erupted, Mahlangu had publicly called for an investigation into their deaths.
Possible Blackmail and Political Sabotage
While the exact circumstances of the video’s release remain unclear, speculation suggests Mahlangu may have shared it with a former partner. Reports claim that this individual allegedly tried to extort money from her and, after failing, leaked the footage to her political opponents in an effort to damage her reputation ahead of next year’s local government elections.
The Tswaing Local Municipality, based in the North West province, has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Meanwhile, Mahlangu has withdrawn from the public eye as the scandal unfolds.
