Harare – War veterans, alongside other concerned citizens, are set to stage a nationwide protest on Thursday in response to Zimbabwe’s deepening economic crisis.
Earlier this month, former liberation war fighters vowed to take to the streets, demanding President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation over what they describe as failed leadership.
In a formal notification to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the war veterans outlined their grievances, including corruption, tribalism, nepotism, and poor governance. They emphasized that the protest aims to hold the government accountable and push for economic reforms.
“We, as concerned citizens, are notifying the Joint Operations Command (JOC) of our intention to participate in a peaceful demonstration across the country,” reads part of the letter.
“This action is a direct response to the deteriorating economy, worsened by corruption and misgovernance. Exercising our constitutional right, we seek economic freedom and accountability from those in power.”
The letter was signed by representatives from the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA), the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), as well as organizations representing healthcare workers, vendors, and teachers.
The protest follows a recent press conference where war veterans called for Mnangagwa’s immediate resignation, echoing sentiments from expelled Zanu PF Central Committee member Blessed Geza. Geza, a vocal critic of the President, has gone into hiding after authorities launched a manhunt for him on charges of inciting public violence and undermining the head of state.
