Parliamentarians have initiated a motion to establish a dedicated framework that reserves government tenders for youth-led businesses, aiming to empower the younger generation and address Zimbabwe’s high unemployment rate.
This initiative comes as Zimbabwe grapples with severe unemployment, leading many young people to turn to drugs and substance abuse. Lawmakers are advocating for youth empowerment and job creation as crucial drivers of economic development.
During a parliamentary session, Chipinge constituency lawmaker Amanda Chakukura emphasized the importance of youth empowerment for sustainable economic growth, highlighting their innovation, diverse perspectives, and significant population representation.
“Youths are innovative, they have unique insights, they are diverse, and they represent a significant portion of the population. Thus, their participation and empowerment in economic development are crucial for creating inclusive and sustainable growth in this country,” Chakukura stated.
“Empowering our youth is not merely about creating jobs; it is about creating an enabling environment where young people can thrive. There must be policies that explicitly include youth empowerment, laws promoting youth participation in economic activities, which will enhance their role in development,” she added.
Mt Darwin member of parliament, Labbany Munemo, also contributed to the discussion, noting that youth empowerment fosters skills, confidence, and purpose, leading to reduced crime, increased job opportunities, and a more peaceful society.
“Youth empowerment benefits young people and society by helping them develop skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose,” Munemo said. “This can lead to fewer young people involved in crime, facilitating more job opportunities, and thereby achieving a more peaceful society.”
Meanwhile, numerous rights and youth-led organizations have been urging the government to provide young people with opportunities in governance and economic development. They highlight the numerous obstacles faced by Zimbabwean youth that hinder their meaningful participation, resulting in significant negative consequences.
