Early this morning, residents of Harare were met with an unusual sight, a convoy of twenty-one (21) military tankers, armored vehicles, and military police trucks moving along Borrowdale Road. The sudden appearance of military hardware on a key city route quickly set social media ablaze, with many questioning the reason behind the deployment.
Prominent lawyer and political activist Fadzayi Mahere was among the first to raise the alarm, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share images and videos of the convoy. She questioned the legality of the military presence, urging authorities to explain why such heavy equipment was being moved through civilian areas without prior notice.
“Why are there military tanks on Harare’s roads today? In light of the constitutional parameters of military deployment, the public has a right to know,” she posted.
As speculation and outrage mounted online, the government responded through its official spokesperson, Permanent Secretary for Information Nick Mangwana, who downplayed the situation.
“There is a scheduled exercise to test equipment taking place today. Nothing to be concerned about,” Mangwana stated, in an attempt to reassure the public.
