In preparation for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, authorities are setting up 100 Village Business Units (VBUs) in Gokwe Nembudziya.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of improving food security at the village level, reflecting President Mnangagwa’s vision for inclusive and sustainable development.

Dr. Paul Tungwarara, Special Presidential Advisor, is spearheading the rollout of these VBUs. Highlighting the initiative’s significance, he stated, “We have dispatched rigs to Gokwe to begin borehole drilling.

Our objective is to ensure every village in the district has access to a solar-powered borehole. Schools will also benefit, allowing them to launch their own income-generating activities.”

Each VBU is designed for self-sufficiency, incorporating a solar-powered borehole under the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme. It will also feature two 10,000-litre water tanks, four communal water taps, and a one-hectare fenced horticultural garden with a drip irrigation system.

Additionally, each unit will have two fish ponds, measuring 100 cubic meters each, while provisions for livestock, such as water and feeding troughs, will be tailored to local needs.

The broader objective is to establish 35,000 such units nationwide. Given that a typical village requires approximately 33 metric tonnes of grain per year, each VBU is expected to produce around seven tonnes per cycle. With two annual cycles, this could supply about a third of the village’s yearly grain requirement.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening rural livelihoods through sustainable agricultural development and ensuring food security at the grassroots level.
