“Give youth real power, don’t just represent them,” ZESN tells Zimbabwe government

The Zimbabwe Elections Support Network (ZESN) is urging the government to move beyond token representation and actively engage young people in democratic processes, granting them genuine power to drive change.

In a statement commemorating Youth Day on Friday, ZESN emphasized the need for the government to harness the energy, creativity, and commitment of young people to build a more resilient democracy.

“ZESN calls on the government to actively engage youth in democratic processes, equipping them with the tools, experiences, and confidence to influence change and build resilient communities,” the statement read.

“The Network reiterates that youth participation in governance transcends mere representation; it is about empowering them to lead initiatives and actively contribute to societal progress.”

“When young people are given a seat at the table, they bring energy, innovative ideas, and a commitment to address issues that matter to their peers.”

“This active participation not only enhances the democratic process but also cultivates a generation of informed and engaged citizens who are better equipped to tackle future challenges,” ZESN stated.

Zimbabwean youth continue to face numerous obstacles that hinder their meaningful participation in governance, resulting in far-reaching negative consequences.

These impediments include marginalization, lack of resources, and a restrictive and harsh political environment.

In the political arena, young people are often perceived as inexperienced and lacking the wisdom necessary for meaningful participation. They are frequently underestimated, regarded merely as a voting bloc or rally participants rather than as individuals capable of contributing valuable ideas and leadership.
