Flooding isolates villages: Urgent call for high-rise Chilonga bridge construction

by Bustop TV News

Local authorities are urgently calling for the construction of a high-rise, all-weather bridge at Chilonga after floodwaters from the Runde River submerged the existing structure, isolating villagers and disrupting access to Chiredzi town.

Communities in Chiredzi South have struggled to reach Chiredzi town since January, with the flooding causing significant disruption, including missed school days for learners and teachers.

Chiredzi District Development Coordinator, Mr. Lovemore Chisema, has appealed to the government for the swift construction of a more resilient bridge.

“I can confirm that the Runde River is currently impassable at Chilonga Bridge due to flooding. The structure is submerged, and we urgently need an all-weather bridge to be constructed, facilitating access to Chiredzi town for communities in areas like Chikombedzi and Majijimba,” Chisema stated.

“We are hopeful that a new, high-rise bridge will be built at Chilonga. We are encouraged by government indications that funds have been allocated for this long-overdue project. We await the project’s commencement and hope it will be soon, ensuring improved connectivity between Chiredzi South and Chiredzi town,” he added.

Chilonga residents report that the bridge was initially washed away in January, and the situation remains critical.

This situation highlights the pressing need for government intervention, as similar challenges persist in numerous rural communities across Zimbabwe.
