HIGH school and primary students from Emakhandeni Luveve constituency are facing sanitary challenges which include water shortages and lack of adequate toilet facilities.
Member of Parliament for the Emakhandeni Luveve Constituency, Discent Bajila raised concerns over these sanitation issues after touring Mtshingwe Primary, Percy Ibbotson Primary, Thembiso Primary, and Emakhandeni High School on Wednesday.
Percy Ibbotson Primary only has two operational bathrooms for 400 learners whilst the teachers share one bathroom.
“The conditions at Percy Ibbotson Hostel are disheartening. Children are learning in a challenging environment that requires immediate attention. We need to engage the Minister of Public Labour and Social Welfare to address these issues as these institutions fall under public service,” Bajila said.
On top of the sanitation challenges they already have, payment delays of school fees for children under the government’s Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) worsen the situation as in some schools the payments have not been made for the past six years.
The legislator called upon the government to address these critical issues as they have long term impacts for learners’ education and well being.
“Although BEAM students can still receive their results, the lack of government payment creates obstacles when applying to high school. Schools prioritize paying students, leaving BEAM beneficiaries disadvantaged.
“The government must urgently address this backlog to ensure seamless transitions for these learners
“These schools are struggling to provide basic necessities like water and secure infrastructure. The delays in BEAM payments exacerbate an already dire situation, making it difficult for children to access and progress in their education. Immediate action is required to safeguard the future of these learners,” he added.
