Zimbabwe’s leading mobile network provider, Econet Wireless, has dismissed recent media reports alleging that the company has suffered a significant data breach involving its customers’ sensitive information.

According to reports circulating on social media, a claim was made that a threat actor was selling a database containing over 852,000 subscriber records. However, Econet has firmly denied these allegations and emphasized that its systems remain secure.

Econet’s Official Response

In a statement released on February 10, 2025, Econet Wireless addressed the allegations that emerged from a social media post on February 4, 2025. The post, initially shared on X (formerly Twitter), suggested that a significant portion of Econet’s subscriber data was compromised and was being offered for sale. Econet responded by stating:

“Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is aware of a social media post first made on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday (February 4, 2025) claiming that a threat actor was selling part of Econet’s subscriber list containing 852,791 customer records.”

Econet Wireless Says There Is No Evidence of Data Breach Found

The company clarified that it immediately initiated an internal investigation upon learning about the allegations. Their findings indicated no evidence of a data breach within their systems that could result in unauthorized access to sensitive customer information. Econet noted that any data allegedly exposed could already be publicly available or accessible through third-party sources.

“Our internal investigations, which started immediately on the day the allegations were made, have detected no breach on our systems that would lead to unauthorized access to sensitive customer data, that is not already in the public domain or accessible through third parties.”

Proactive Measures to Ensure Data Security

Despite finding no evidence of a breach, Econet emphasized its commitment to customer data privacy and cybersecurity. The company activated its incident management protocols as soon as the allegations surfaced. To reinforce their efforts, Econet collaborated with international cybersecurity experts to monitor their systems around the clock and enhance overall security. Econet stated:

“However, because we take claims of any breach of our systems very seriously, the moment the allegations were first reported, we activated our incident management processes, working alongside international cybersecurity experts, and have been monitoring our systems 24/7 to ensure heightened security of our business systems and the privacy of our customers’ sensitive data.”
