Alpha Media Holdings journalist Blessed Mhlanga, who has been in remand prison for over three weeks, is reportedly unwell, with concerns growing over his deteriorating health.
His lawyer, Chris Mhike, confirmed that Mhlanga has been suffering from a fever, significantly affecting his well-being. Despite his condition, Mhike said Mhlanga remains mentally strong.
“He was complaining of a fever today. So, he is not at his best in terms of health, but he remains strong and brave,” Mhike told reporters.
Mhlanga’s hopes for release remain uncertain as the High Court has indefinitely reserved its ruling on his bail application. Judge Gibson Mandaza stated that more time was needed to review arguments from both the prosecution and defense before making a decision.
The journalist was arrested on February 23 on allegations of transmitting messages that authorities claim incited violence.
The charges stem from a press conference held by political activist Blessed Geza, who called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation. Geza is currently in hiding, with police seeking his arrest on allegations of undermining the president.
Prosecutors allege Mhlanga was involved in sharing the controversial messages. However, his legal team strongly denies the accusations, arguing that Mhlanga was neither present at the press conference nor responsible for transmitting the video in question.
“He was not at the press conference and has no involvement in what was said. He also did not share the video because he is not HSTV,” Mhike stated, emphasizing that the video was owned by HSTV, not Mhlanga.
With the bail ruling still pending, Mhlanga remains in custody as legal battles over his detention continue.
