Respect the Law! Churches Warn Against Extending Mnangagwa’s Rule

by Bustop TV News

Religious leaders have called on the government to respect Zimbabwe’s Constitution and the rule of law as discussions about extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure continue.

Zanu PF remains divided over the issue, with one faction pushing for a constitutional amendment to allow Mnangagwa to stay in power beyond his current second and final term, while others insist on adhering to the legal limits.

The proposal to extend Mnangagwa’s rule until 2030 has received backing from some government ministers and legislators but has also faced strong resistance from opposition parties, civil society groups, and churches.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) stressed the need for good governance, urging national leaders to uphold constitutional principles and prioritize accountability, transparency, and inclusivity.

“As the church, we stand for the protection of constitutional democracy, the rule of law, and ethical leadership. It is crucial that governance structures remain transparent and accountable,” ZCC said.

The organization also criticized the misuse of constitutional democracy, arguing that it has been manipulated to serve the interests of a privileged few rather than benefiting the broader population.

“Our nation finds itself in a situation where constitutional democracy is being used as a tool to secure wealth and power for a small elite, rather than advancing the aspirations of the majority and honoring the principles of our liberation struggle,” the statement read.

ZCC further expressed concern over the diminishing trust in political leadership and key state institutions, including Parliament and the judiciary, citing failures in upholding constitutional obligations.

“The duty to protect and implement the Constitution has been neglected, leading to widespread disillusionment among Zimbabweans. Confidence in political leaders across all parties, as well as in democratic institutions, continues to decline,” the church body added.

As debates over Mnangagwa’s possible third term persist, calls for constitutional integrity and respect for democratic principles are growing louder across various sectors of society.
