President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged unity within Zanu PF, cautioning members against factionalism and internal disputes that threaten party stability.
His remarks came during a Politburo meeting held at the party’s headquarters on Wednesday.
Zanu PF is grappling with internal tensions, as rival factions clash over a push to extend Mnangagwa’s leadership beyond the two-term constitutional limit. Addressing party officials, Mnangagwa condemned divisive narratives and urged members to uphold party values and traditions.
“False narratives that create discord should not take root in our political landscape. Genuine cadres of the party understand the principles of our revolution, our history, and our ideological foundation,” he stated.
He further warned against individuals exploiting the party’s liberation legacy for personal gain. “Beware of those masquerading as loyalists while working against the party’s unity. True commitment to Zanu PF should not be seasonal or conditional; it must be unwavering at all times,” he emphasized.
Despite Mnangagwa’s repeated assertions that he will step down at the end of his term, a faction within the party continues to push for constitutional amendments that would allow him to remain in power beyond 2028. This movement has gained support from certain cabinet ministers, including Daniel Garwe and Jenfan Muswere, as well as some opposition legislators.
The debate over succession has deepened divisions within Zanu PF, with war veterans—led by Central Committee member Blessed Geza—calling for Mnangagwa to step aside.
Mnangagwa reiterated the importance of safeguarding the party’s principles, warning against external influences. “It is imperative to protect and uphold our party’s ideals. All structures must remain vigilant as external forces seek to manipulate our people,” he stated.
As tensions persist, Zanu PF faces a defining moment in its leadership trajectory, with internal dynamics set to shape the party’s future direction.
