Econet Denies False Claims About VPN Deductions on EcoCash

by Bustop TV News

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has refuted a viral social media post that falsely claimed the company would deduct funds from EcoCash wallets of customers using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access free data.

The post, which was widely shared, mimicked an official announcement from Econet and inaccurately stated that the company had detected unauthorized VPN usage and would be deducting funds to recover the cost of data.

The image, which appeared to be sourced from Econet’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, was quickly flagged by the company as “FAKE” and clarified that it was not a legitimate statement. The misleading post read:

“We’ve detected unauthorized VPN activity that has compromised our network security and enabled unauthorized access to our data services.

This has led to some customers benefiting from free data access.

To ensure fairness, we will be implementing automated deductions from EcoCash wallets for those who have been using the VPN application. These deductions will be based on the data consumed.

Please note that customers not using the VPN app will not be impacted.”
