Zimbabwe’s marginalized mining communities will gain access to urgent care for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through a new partnership between the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) and Discovery Ambulance Services.
This initiative falls under the Presidential Emergency Medical Scheme (PEMS) and aims to improve healthcare access for artisanal miners nationwide. Mining communities have experienced a sharp rise in STI infections, often due to financial constraints and the remote locations of mining sites, which hinder access to treatment.
Discovery Ambulance Services has restructured its operations to prioritize STI treatment for miners, ensuring they receive the necessary care across various regions and provinces, according to a statement from the Manicaland Information Desk.
ZMF President Henrietta Rushwaya expressed her support for the partnership, emphasizing the difficulties miners face in accessing healthcare.
“This partnership represents a much-needed step in providing equitable healthcare for artisanal miners who typically face payment challenges due to seasonal remuneration,” Rushwaya said.
To further support this effort, the ZMF has introduced a specialized medical aid facility to assist miners with treatment costs. The construction of clinical booths near mining areas is also planned, enabling miners to receive timely medical attention without lengthy travel.
Health experts have praised the initiative and are encouraging miners to utilize these services to help reduce the spread of STIs within mining communities.
