President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced that the government is undertaking an ambitious project to construct dams and sink boreholes across the country to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Zimbabwe is currently grappling with a severe El Niño-induced drought, exacerbated by climate change.

During a recent National Thanksgiving and Dedication Service in Bulawayo, Mnangagwa outlined the government’s efforts to address the crisis. This initiative is expected to significantly increase the country’s water storage capacity, providing farmers with reliable irrigation sources and enhancing their resilience to climate-related shocks.

Climate change has had a profound impact on every sector of Zimbabwean society, with severe consequences for food security and hydropower generation.

In the agriculture sector, as a Government and a people, we are not folding our arms and surrendering to the vagaries of climate change.

“Numerous dams are being built and boreholes sunk to mitigate the impact of climate change,” Mnangagwa said.

Meanwhile villagers in Mwenezi District, Chingwizi area are facing devastating effects of climate change and have been appealing for help from authorities.

Many other rural areas in Zimbabwe have been experiencing severe hunger and relying on food aid from humanitarian organizations such as the World Food Program, USAID, and Care International.
