Students from the oldest technical college in the country, Harare Polytechnic, have requested President Emmerson Mnangagwa to interfere to an allegedly escalating oppression and student’s rights violation that is taking place at the institution.
This follows after 8 part time students were beaten and arrested by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) branch, Support Unity.
According to one Harare Poly student (name withheld) who spoke to Bustop TV, the 8 were beaten and arrested on Thursday afternoon, after the institution’s security guards refused to let them enter the college to submit their assignments.
“As students from Harare Poly we request His Excellence President ED Mnangagwa to intervene as our institution is under serious violation of human rights, oppression and inhuman treatment by those in the highest offices,” the student said.
In March the institution’s principal Tafadzwa Mudondo suspended two students whom he accused for hugging at the campus, saying it was in violation of the World Health Organization (WHO) and government Covid-19 protocols.
Moreover, the students who spoke to this journalists said they request other organizations together with the Parliament to hear their plea.
“We also request the Parliament of Zimbabwe, The Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education Professor Amon Murwira, Active Movements and Unions and also the Human Rights Lawyers to intervene,” he said.
Meanwhile, the student’s representative who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the police accused the 8 part time poly students for planning a demonstration and also told them they were being arrested because there are Zinasu members.
