The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned the public from leaving their homesteads during this Easter holiday.

Only those exempted will be allowed to travel.

In a statement yesterday, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said people must observe the lockdown rules pronounced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to curb the spread of COVID-19.

“The police are urging all Zimbabweans to observe Easter holiday whilst at home with a view of containing the spread of COVID-19 virus.

“No movement of vehicles or people will be allowed on the country’s roads, except those with exemptions. Those with exemptions should also act responsibly and avoid abusing the privilege.”

Nyathi emphasized on the need to act responsibly and strive for zero road traffic accidents during this period.

A large number of deaths due to road traffic accidents have been recorded in previous years.

“Let us all be conscious of security and safety during this period and act responsibly in order to curtil the spread of COVID-19, in the same vein let us strive to have zero road traffic accidents during this period.”

He alluded that the security services have noted with concern an increase of motor vehicles parked in Harare’s central business district for no reason as such they will be impounded and their owners will be arrested.

To date a total of 2885 people have been arrested countrywide for liquor, traffic, opening of business, unnecessary movement, and other offences that stand to defy COVID-19 lockdown measures.
