The Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) has condemned the arrest of the Chitungwiza Residents Trust (CHITREST)director, Alice Kuvheya.

Kuvheya was arrested on the 14th of June for allegedly speaking against the ongoing demolitions of ‘illegal’ structures by council in the dormitory town.

In a statement, ZIMCODD said her arrest discourages women from partaking in economic development activities.

“We call on the government of Zimbabwe through the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs to facilitate timely delivery of justice for Kuvheya. The act of arresting Kuvheya not only silences, intimidates and marginalize women from participating in economic development but also contravenes Section 14(1-2) of the constitution which provides that: the state and all institutions and agencies of government at every level must endeavor to facilitate and take measures to empower through appropriate, transparent, for and just affirmative action, all marginalized persons, groups and communities in Zimbabwe.

“At all times the State and all institutions and agencies of government at every level must ensure that appropriate and adequate measures are undertaken to create empowerment for all Zimbabweans especially women and youths,” reads the statement.

ZIMCODD further urged government to look into matters raised by Kuvheya through dialogue and address the challenges of economic informality, illegal structures and citizens dire needs to lead sustainable livelihoods in an economy that is not producing any jobs.

Women and youths constitute the majority of the informal economy in Zimbabwe and hence empowering them will help achieve National Development Strategy goals.
