Zimbabwe yesterday recorded 686 new Covid-19 confirmed cases with 51 deaths.

The 686 recorded positive cases saw a decline from the 1 370 cases that were reported on the 31st of July 2021.

As of 1 August 2021, the country had recorded 109 546 Covid-19 positive cases, 76 665 recoveries and 3 583 deaths.

The national recovery rate stands at 70% with 809 new recoveries and active cases go down to 29 298.

Lincoln Charimari a representative from the World Health Organisation and also a Medical Doctor said six Covid-19 vaccines have been approved for use so far. He was speaking at a virtual workshop organised by Gender Media Connect and Media Institute of Southern Africa on Covid -19 Fact Checking and reporting Media Skills training.

“As of 20 July 2021, six vaccine types had received WHO emergency use listing (EUL) approval, and these are Oxford Astra Zeneca, Johnson and Johnson, Moderna, Pfizer BioNTeCh, Sinopharm and Sinovac. The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization issues recommendations on the use of the various vaccines. SAGE is the principal advisory group to WHO for vaccines and immunization,” said Charimari.

Charimari added that according to findings by WHO, the vaccine does not provide full 100% protection so breakthrough infections can happen, but as herd immunityis achieved fewer people will contract the virus.

As at 1 August 2021, 1 654 112 people had received their first dose while 779 229 are fully vaccinated.
