Yesterday Zimbabwe’s U19 cricket team lost to the New Zealand U19 cricket team by 2 runs in their first match of the ODI Quadrangular Series at the Kingsmead stadium.

Despite New Zealand boasting of fresh talents that comprise of Fergus Lellman, Ollie White, and Hayden Dickson the match seemed evenly matched.

Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to bowl first which saw New Zealand reaching 204/9. The batsmen let the Zimbabweans down as they were all bowled out 202/10.

However, Zimbabwe’s coach Prosper Utseya was not disparaged but rather motivated considering that the Zimbabwean team was viewed as the underdogs.

“It was a hard pill to swallow for everyone but we don’t see ourselves as underdogs we believe should we play to our potential we can beat anyone on the day.

Players are all ok and in good spirits and we have made some tactful changes,” said Utseya. Zimbabwe will tomorrow lock horns with India in the second match of the ODI Quadrangular Series at the same venue at 09h30 (CAT).

In yesterday’s other encounter, South Africa failed to maximise their home advantage as they lost to India by 66 runs after they were bowled out 198/9. Their next match will be against New Zealand tomorrow at the Chatsworth Oval stadium in Durban at 09h30 (CAT).
