Women intensify fight for rights

Women demand for the right to freely associate and assemble as they are further being denied their rights in the challenge against patriarchy.

Female activists from Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), PADA Platform and Economic Justice for Women Project, (PEJWP) came together for the women driven campaign to reclaim the freedom of association and assembly in Zimbabwe was launched on the 8th of March 2021 in Harare.

The campaign was launched through training for trainers with 20 participants from five provinces namely, Matabeleland North, Midlands, Harare, Mashonaland East, Harare and Manicaland by Female teachers and women’s rights activists participated.

A statement released by the three organisations stated that patriarchal dominance remains a stumbling block in the progression of women rights in the society.

“Women have been on the receiving end of multiple forms of abuse in the obtaining exploitative patriarchal system. The state further denies them the right to freely associate and assemble to collectively challenge patriarchy.
In this women’s month, women will be escalating the fight for these fundamental freedoms”.

The training was held to uphold freedom of association and assembly and active participation of women.

“To strengthen understanding of legal framework and government’s administration conduct with regards to freedom of association and assembly, enabling active response in advocacy among women activists. To enhance the capacity, preparedness and response of at risk activists and to enhance participant’s digital literacy skills so that they can effectively and safely leverage virtual spaces for advocacy”.

The training covered legal framework of freedom of association and assembly Digital literacy and risk management which will be cascaded to the communities.
