Today the world celebrates International condom day under the theme safer is sexy, as a way of preventing unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

International Condom Day is promoted by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) in an effort to reduce the spread of HIV through safe sex practices, since its inception in 2009, it has been an informal observance celebrated in conjunction with Valentine’s Day.

International Condom Day has managed to stress the importance of protection since have become aware of the catastrophic repercussions of unprotected sex.

Netizens worldwide, have shown their interest in the day through the creation of memes and putting them on various media platforms as a reminder that Valentine’s day has to be enjoyed putting precautions in their love life.

In Zimbabwe, a number of condoms are distributed amid reports that the uptake of the female condoms remains low due to misconceptions.

Condoms are an important component of the countrys HIV prevention programme as their use is one of the seven tried and tested HIV prevention methods recommended.

Condoms have, however, turned to be one of the most effective ways of protection from HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies.

Despite the proven results, condoms have not been availed to secondary school going children, while, AIDS and health lobby groups have also shunned artisanal mining sites where HIV/AIDS prevalence rates are high in the nation.

Also, Zimbabwean women, some reports claim that the female condoms are not comfortable and cause allergic reactions.

Some however, say that men prefer to initiate sex and would rather be the ones that wear condoms.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest non-profit HIV/AIDS organization in the world, kicked off a week of awareness programs across the United States.

Reports states that the AHF will hand out over 1 million free condoms and provide free STD testing and HIV screenings at ICD events throughout the month of February.
