Teachers on Monday conducted a virtual demonstration against poor salary and working conditions.

The online protest held under the theme “Teachers Friends To All, Enemy to None coincided with Zimbabwe’s anti-sanctions day which is commemorated annually on the 25th of October.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) posted pictures on their official twitter page of teachers and citizens holding placards inscribed with various messages calling for the restoration of a living wage in line with pre-October 2018 salaries of USD540.

A statement released by the vibrant teacher’s representative body had testimonies of teachers lamenting revealing their private lives to the world to show the extent of their suffering,

“One of the teachers showed a heart-breaking image of his father dying because he could not afford to pay for his blood transfusion, another teacher compared her existence as that of being dragged to the primitive era where there was no electricity because she cannot afford to buy electricity. This brings to the centre the fact that teachers are failing to access health care and affording the basics of survival,” read part of the statement.

Zimbabwean teachers are earning 16,7percent salary of the average teacher salary in SADC, with some teachers taking home a monthly salary of 16 308RTGS.
