The Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (SWAZ) in partnership with the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) will be hosting golf workshops in Bulawayo and Harare.

In a statement, SWAZ Secretary General, Mehluli Sibanda said the workshops will improve coverage of the sport.

“The Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe is excited to announce a partnership with the Zimbabwe Golf Association which will see our members attend two workshops, one in Bulawayo and the other in Harare in June 2021. The Bulawayo workshop, where 26 SWAZ members are taking part is scheduled for Friday 11 June 2021 at the Bulawayo Golf Club while the Harare workshop will be held at the Police Golf Club on 22 June 2021.”

Sibanda added that golf was the least covered sport in the country as media lacked understanding of it.

“The objective of the workshops is to improve the understanding of the sport of golf among our members in order to upgrade their writing skills when it comes to the sport. We have realised that golf is one of the least covered sports in Zimbabwe not because there is no activity in the particular sport but because journalists lack the understanding of the sport. We believe by having these workshops, coverage of golf will increase because our members will be upskilled after attending the two workshops.”

Ephraim Mashingaidze, ZGA Board Member, marketing and communications also shared what they hope to achieve as an association by partnering with SWAZ.

“Zimbabwe golfers association is working in conjunction with the Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe where will conduct media workshops in a bid to improve, upgrade how our journalists, photographers and broadcasters understand the game of golf to improve their ability to interpret the results at a golf tournament. When this is achieved, journalists become part of us and we become part of them. This will benefit both ends especially for golf. It will greatly assist, help, demystify the challenges we have as the sport of golf in the country, the region, the continent. So we will be having a media workshop in Bulawayo on the 11th of June and in Harare on Tuesday 22 June,” said Mashingaidze.

SWAZ recently held a workshop in partnership with the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee in Bulawayo on safe and inclusive sport. More workshops have been set aside for the year.
