The inaugural Martial Arts summer training camp which was set for 9 – 13 October was successfully held at Ruwa Scout Park in Harare.
Organised by the Kyokushin Karate Club and Vakaki Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Academy, the camp sort to gather martial arts practitioners from different locations and of different to train together.
Bustop TV talked to the co-founder of Vakaki MMA Academy, Sneider Adam who gave a breakdown of what the camp was about.
He said, “The theme of the camp was The Future is Now. We were looking into our rules, mission, aim, purpose and our duty which is to nurture talent and future champions as well as to build a community not to create a following. We were sharing ideas and different purposes. At the Camp, we had four different styles of Martial arts. Each style was represented by either three to five members. By that, we saw a huge number of people coming from different backgrounds sharing the importance of being well equipped with Martial Arts.”
Sensei Moses Mutende, the co-organiser of the event and Vakaki MMA Academy co-founder was happy with the camp.
Sensei Mutenge said, “Our goal of having different martial arts was accomplished. We actually had enough of everything. Hygiene; we had a clean environment, toilets and showers and a lot of clean borehole water. We had various kinds of food for breakfast, lunch and supper. Accommodation; we had enough as well for everyone. No one was injured we all went back in good shape just sore muscles from hardcore training. And the discipline was outstanding because sometimes when different styles get together they argue and look down on other styles but we had no such negative energy.
Participants at the camp were elated by the event.
Kickboxing instructor, Walter “Drago”Chiteto (drago) said, “It was a pleasure to be invited to take part in Summer Training Camp. The camp was so vibrant and helped so much to the athletes as there were different coaches from different styles, including Judo with Sensei Moses, Kyokushin with Sensei Sneider, Kickboxing with me and Taekwondo with Sabmin Jeff Nyangoni. From my kickboxing side as an instructor l personally felt honoured to take some of the classes on this precious event. The athletes were so happy and full of energy during the classes. And I believe that everyone benefited a lot and I am looking forward to another training camp like this one.”
Taekwondo instructor Jeff Nyangoni said, “The camp was a good idea and a very wonderful time to get to learn a lot about different styles, exchanging information helping each other grow in the martial arts world. The majority of the people learnt a lot of things that they had no idea about and I would say it was a great experience. Things like that need to done more often.”
Sensei Sneider was thankful to all those who came through and announced dates to yet another camp in November.
“On behalf of Glen Norah Kyokushin Karate Club and Vakaki MMA Academy, we would like to thank everyone who supported us so that the Camp would go very smooth. We do really hope to see a large number of people in November because we’re also going to host another camp which is going to be a boot camp from 20 to 24 November.” He said.
The venue of the November camp was not confirmed to this publication.
