Preparations for the annual Shoko Festival which be held in September are now underway.

The event will this year run under the theme “Shoko Universe” from the 20th to the 25th of September 2021.

Shoko is also going to be virtual due to the pandemic and will be streamed on Facebook and YouTube with all the provinces in the country will be represented.

“As an answer to the times we are living in, this year we will invite the audience to dive into the completely virtual Shoko Universe,” said Shoko Festival Director, Samm Farai Monro AKA Comrade Fatso.

“We will take you on a riveting journey riding on our collective imaginations through gritty urban culture, explosive music, crazy sets, never-seen-before collaborations and a celebration of the impossible!”

The culture festival’s theme sets to invite the audience into the Shoko world and experience what the artists are experiencing in their day to day living.

“Zimbabwe’s premier urban culture festival’s theme “The Phoenix Edition” is about using arts for Zimbabwe to rise from the ashes in these uncertain times of Covid and Lockdown.

“It comes as a revelation for people to rise uniquely above Coronavirus like the Phoenix does through creating an inspirational artistic space in the trying times of Zimbabwe today,” read the statement.

Shoko Festival coordinator, Kim Kute, said the festival will continue to challenge itself regarding how it is delivered to the audience.

“As Shoko Festival, we pride ourselves in being a dynamic space for freedom of expression, urban culture and positive social change, we continue to challenge ourselves in terms of how we will deliver the festival and we promise to surprise and to inspire the audience.

“So we invite the audience to come and enter the Shoko Universe. Let’s begin the journey!” she said.

The Shoko Festival 2020 edition was Zimbabwe’s first ever fully virtual festival and ran for 6 days reaching over 130,000 views online.

The festival aims at giving upcoming artists in different urban culture genres an opportunity to perform, including Mash Up nights and retaining the diverse programming including the Hub Unconference, Zimbabwe’s premier digital media conference, and the Shoko Comedy Night.

Other new curated events will also be announced soon for the 2020 edition.
