Masvingo – The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) has called on the government to ensure all citizens are accorded their political, economic and social rights.

ZPP said this in their June monthly monitoring report.

For the rights of the people to continue, the ZPP recommended the government to work with the will of the people at heart.

The government has to priorities fixing the economy.

“Government should prioritise fixing the economy as it has become the biggest threat to people’s socio-economic rights. An inclusive approach should be followed to ensure that everyone contributes to making decisions about the economy. In addition; separation of powers should be implemented,” the report read.

ZPP added that there should be no discrimination of any individual.

“Government should prioritise its workers and accord them a living wage as failure to do so impacts on the fundamental rights to health and education. The government should also look into the plight of the people in the informal sector, persons with disabilities and ensure they get adequate social support,” ZPP said.

People rights to freedom of expression are being infringed and the government has to make sure the rights of the people in such cases are not thwarted.

“Arbitrary arrests should stop, and government should respect the people’s rights to assemble, petition and associate, and should not interfere in such. More importantly and democracy thrives on a nation that enjoys freedom.
In the interests of the public and interests of its own credibility, government should conduct itself in a transparent manner when investigating cases like the abduction of the three MDC youth leaders and other related cases, victims are not able to tell their side of the story,” ZPP stated.

ZPP added that government must bring to book those who break the law whether the police or the army or government officials; everyone must go through the same due criminal procedure. By doing so, this will restore the confidence of foreign investment.
