Rape and robbery cases involving pirate taxis in the country have increased by 103% in the past year, online fact-checking organisation, ZimFact has revealed.

ZimFact said according to data obtained from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) cases of rape and robbery increased sharply as of January to August 2021.

This acute rise of the rape and robbery cases comes at a time when the government  banned all private commuter buses not registered under the Zimbabwe United Passengers Association (ZUPCO).

However, the move has resulted in a huge transport crisis in the country.

Meanwhile, the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) president Tafadzwa Goliath concurred with the ZimFact’s factsheet.

“These facts and figures are correct and I believe that since they are coming from the ZRP they are even more accurate.

“Figures don’t lie, citizens are suffering and these private taxis are stealing and abusing them on a daily basis,” he said.

Goliath indicated that government should consider engaging other players from the transport sector to assist ZUPCO.

He also emphasized that the government should make the transport sector an open market business because ZUPCO has shown little to no competence.

In addition, the PAZ president advised the government to adopt the transport model  previously practised in Bulawayo.

“Bulawayo had the best transport model in the country as compared to this one which poses too much centralization hence resulting in shortage of transport,” Goliath told Bustop TV.
