Regional and international pressure has mounted on cornered President Emmerson Mnangagwa as South Africa’s ruling party, African National Congress (ANC), The Elders and the United Nations (UN) have expressed worry over reports of human rights abuses in Zimbabwe.

The ANC through its secretary general, Ace  Magashule said that his party and government were following developments in Zimbabwe with keen interest.

Speaking to eNCA he condemned the human rights violations which he said were uncalled for adding that the ANC was discussing the way forward and possibly intervene.

A number of people have been arrested and others assaulted by suspected state security agents for partaking in the #31July movement.

Global leaders group, The Elders also weighed in.

“With reports of arrests, beatings & abductions in Zimbabwe, The Elders call for an immediate end to violence, & emphasise the fight against #COVID19 should be rooted in respect for human rights. As the scale of #ZimbabweanLivesMatter shows, dialogue & reform are urgently needed,” the organisation said in a tweet.

Meanwhile the UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres urged government to respect its citizens rights.

A statement from the UN read,”the GVT of Zimbabwe should protect all fundamental human rights, notably:

  • The freedom of opinion
  • The freedom of expression
  • The right to freedom of association
  • The right to freedom of peaceful assembly

#ZimbabweanLivesMatter”

This was the second call from the United Nations after a similar red flag was raised late last month that the Covid-19 pandemic must not be used to stifle freedoms.

There has been widespread calls for Mnangagwa’s administration to respect fundamental freedoms.
